PhD Webinar – Design for Mechanical Textile Recycling

Due to the current health crisis all planned physical activities at UAL have been cancelled  and we are now connecting online. Circular Design Lab, an interest group run out of the Centre for Circular Design by PhD student Cathryn Hall took up this opportunity to connect online with UAL post-grad students across the world and with the centre’s network.

The format for this presentation started with a 20 minute presentation on the specifics of textile recycling as it exists today and how it relates to Cathryn’s research. This was then followed by 20 minutes of questions and answers. Participants could use the live conference tool to write their questions in the chat function, these were then addressed by the speaker.

The format for this talk started with a 20 minute presentation of the entire PhD project, speeding through the different insights from the research to give an overview of the concept of Textile Design for Disassembly. This was then followed by 20 minutes of questions and answers. Participants could use the live conference tool to write their questions in the chat function, these were then addressed by the speaker.

Circular Surgeries

Future Fabric Expo

The Future Fabrics Expo is the largest dedicated showcase of globally sourced, commercially available sustainably and responsibly produced fabrics and materials. 

Circular Design Lab had the first meeting of 2020 at the Future Fabric Expo. This was a great opportunity to discuss the future of sustainable and circular materials.

Here Today Here Tomorrow

Julia Crew was the guest speaker at this CDL session, discussing her work with the Centre for Sustainable Fashion and her journey as co-founder of the fair-trade knitwear and accessories brand Here Today Here Tomorrow.

Julia is a graduate from the first cohort of the MA Fashion and the Environment, now MA Fashion Futures, of which she is now the acting course leader. In 2011, she co-founded the Here Today Here Tomorrow collective with two other graduates of the course. In this CDL session, which was followed by an open conversation, we discussed the challenges and success in using design for good.

Exploring Circles

Monday 21st October 2019 we hosted our first session of the new academic year. We were overwhelmed by the numbers of students from across UAL. Students from CSM, LCF, LCC, and CCW forming a multi-disciplinary group from fashion to architecture to service and business design.

An open discussion started by asking:

❓what is circular design?

❓What are the challenges of transitioning from our current linear system to one that is circular?

The discussion was framed by the CCD –
MATERIALS | MODELS | MINDSETS.

FAST AND LIGHT

CDL welcomes Prof. Emeritus Kay Politowicz for the next Exploring Circles session to present her work with circular materials for fast and sustainable fashion. 
Kay Politowicz is a designer and researcher, known for both her work in printed textiles and her theoretical/practice-based research into sustainable textile design strategies. She is a co-founder of Textiles Environment Design, now Centre for Circular Design. In recent years she has been working with Swedish scientists on developing a biodegradable paper cloth as an alternative to fast fashion materials.This session will take the form of a 40 minute presentation followed by Q&A and an informal discussion.

Circular Design Lab…. presents

This term at Circular Design Lab, we are playing a small part in the Centre for Circular Design 3 day event: THERE AND BACK AGAIN.

There And Back Again: starting at the end is the second edition of this series of talks and workshops engaging the research community at UAL and beyond around the theme of designing for a circular economy. Centre for Circular Design is hosting 48 hours of talks and events across three days. Come and hear from the researchers and invited guest speakers about how design is changing to consider end of life impacts at the very beginning of the process; challenging the way we view waste, make materials and define products, services and systems.
